A flat photo of a round problem
A regular dental X-ray is a flat image — like a shadow on a wall. It’s fine for spotting a cavity, but your jaw isn’t flat. It has depth, curves, and important things running through it that a shadow simply can’t show.
A CBCT — cone beam computed tomography, but nobody will make you say that twice — takes a series of images and builds them into a true 3D model of your jaw. Your surgeon can turn it, slice through it, and measure it from any angle.
What it’s like to actually get one
You sit or stand still, usually with your chin on a small rest. The machine rotates around your head once. It doesn’t touch you, it doesn’t hurt, and it’s over in well under a minute — often 10 to 40 seconds of actual scanning (ballpark — the office does it every day and will tell you the real number).
It’s a low-dose scan, more than a single dental X-ray but far less than the medical CT scans people picture. Honestly, your dentist may have better 3D imaging of your jaw than the hospital had of your kids when they were born.
