The fundamentals
Am I too old for this? (and other candidacy myths)
The honest answer to the question almost everyone is quietly asking.
The bottom line
There is no age limit on implants. People in their 80s and 90s get them successfully. What matters is your health and your gums — not the number on your birthday.
Listen to this lesson
Age is the myth, not the barrier
Let’s put the big one to rest first. Implants are for adults once the jaw has finished growing, and there is no upper limit. Good health matters far more than age, full stop. If anything, this is the age when people finally decide they are done putting up with a bad tooth.
What they actually check
Two things matter most: healthy gums and enough jawbone to hold the post. If a tooth has been gone a while, the bone may have thinned — but that does not disqualify you. It is extremely common, and it is usually fixed with a small bone-grafting step first. (There is a whole course here on that, because so many people hear “you need more bone” and panic. You are in good company.)
The health stuff worth being honest about
A few things can slow healing, so your surgeon will ask: smoking and uncontrolled diabetes are the big two. None of this is about judging you — it is about planning the procedure so it works the first time. Be straight with them and they will be straight with you.
Straight talk
If an office turns you away for being “too old” without even looking at a scan, that tells you something about them, not about you. Age alone does not disqualify anybody. The real answer comes from a consultation and a 3D scan of your actual mouth.
Key things to remember
- There is no upper age limit — health matters more than age.
- Healthy gums and enough jawbone are what count; grafting can rebuild bone if needed.
- Be honest about smoking and diabetes — it helps your surgeon plan, not judge.
- A consult and 3D scan give you the real, personal answer.
